We believe waterproof leather has the potential to last a lifetime. That’s why we created ‘100K,’ the waterproof leather that stays dry for 100 000 steps – 6X longer than industry standards.
DRY FOR LONGER
The current standard for waterproof materials is 15 000 steps under wet conditions. ‘100K’ is the waterproof technology from ECCO Leather that guarantees leather stays dry for over 100 000 steps. Testing for waterproofing is done on a shoe’s upper in very wet conditions. The leather is flexed to simulate how it would move during a step. The standard number of flexes before leather allows water to permeate is 15K, as determined by SATRA. With our newly developed retanning treatment we were able to push this to 100K and beyond.
Breathability in waterproof leather measures the amount of water vapour that moves in and out of leather, and the amount of water absorbed. ‘100K’ from ECCO Leather absorbs 20% less water than competitors’ waterproof leather.
Along with breathability, it is also important that the leather remains supple and in excellent condition when it gets wet. Our testing applied 100K steps, or the equivalent of walking in extreme damp conditions for 100 km without any water penetration into the leather – all the while restoring to full functionality after natural drying, even in salt water.
We tested ‘100K’ Waterproof Leather on our own Golf and Outdoor footwear, and compared them with competitors’ closest styles. The results showed a clear advantage in water resistance, and similar or better than average breathability.
*Testing was conducted at our own facilities, in simulation of standard testing.
